The pottery

R eally ancient potteries hardly exist nowadays. However, one of the Roman pottery quarters was discovered underneath Oxfordstreet / Wilhelmstreet. Only a few centimeters below the old institution the first findings were discovered. Among them were 1900 year-old earthernware pieces, 60 conical weaving weights, a large amount of intact pots and well preserved kilns. The kilns, which the Romans always built with their own hands, were in good condition. They needed half a year to build one. Kilns with a ceiling with holes in it, fire holes and parts of the dome were found. In the kilns all sorts of pottery were fired, e.g. household articles. Life and work of the Romans mostly took place in the pottery quarters. We learn more and more about the Roman way of life and about their buildings; and there is no end to new discoveries!
